Meet the Photographer
Hi! I'm Maegan.
Maegan Guerette is an active creative voice in the Greater Toronto Area. Having graduated from OCADU in 2003, she has been an entrepreneur in photography based visual art as well as painting and illustration for over two decades. Her days are spent caring for her four children, dog Penny, backyard chickens with her husband of 23 years. She has a healthy obsession with coffee, and if she ever finds a spare moment, she could be found gardening, or reading to avoid folding laundry.
I started photographing families when I started my own. I kept seeing the polished, rigid family photos everywhere, and they never looked like my actual life with my kids — so I wanted something honest instead.
Raising my own four while I photograph other people’s has only sharpened that. You blink and they’re in different-sized pants. Every stage is its own short season — the new-baby overwhelm, the snuggles and the smell of their hair, then suddenly they’re toddlers, wide-eyed and rambunctious, gripping your hair with clammy hands — and it’s gone before you’ve caught up to it. You don’t grieve it until it’s already behind you.
So I don’t need every moment. I need the true ones — however the day actually went. And if I could hand my future self one photograph from right now, it wouldn’t be posed. It would be all of us, together, exactly as we were — so I’d remember not just what we did, but how it felt.
That’s the whole reason I do this. There’s no other way to keep it close.
